Tie (44)That great American invention, the button-down collar, is making new waves in the UK. The question is - when can you wear one?
The answer is ‘not when you’re wearing a suit’ – they are great shirts, and somewhat cheaper than their ‘dress’ brothers, but they shouldn’t be worn with a suit, particularly to a job interview.
On the other hand it is the right shirt to wear with a jacket, or a blazer, if you’re that kind of a chap, or even with a jumper. It’s somewhat more casual than a dress shirt and doesn’t require a tie – in fact, fitting a tie under a button-down collar can be something of a task.
This year’s fashion look, as seen on Andrew Flintoff, is to wear a button-down shirt with a polo-shirt underneath.
Because your neck can move more in a button-down shirt, it’s oddly prone to developing more of a ring around the collar top than tighter-fitting shirt collars. The way to deal with this is either to have your shirts dry cleaned or laundered, in which case the ring will magically disappear, or if you do your own laundry, simply rub around the collar with a bar of wet white soap – doesn’t matter what kind, as long as you dampen it and it’s white soap not coloured. Do that when you take the shirt off, no matter how long it’s going to sit in the washing pile before you wash it, and the dirt will be removed when it finally hits the washing machine.
