In recent seasons, many men's fashion rules have gone out the window, leaving men - and the women who shop for them - a little confused about what to buy.
This year their task is even harder, because the newest Men's Suits feature a slim cut that some men may be reluctant to try. Meanwhile, the casual clothing that accompanied dot-com boom is giving way to a more formal office look.
Katrina Szish, a senior style editor at GQ magazine, appeared on Good Morning America to explain how to shop for Men's Suits, casual business attire and weekend wear. Designers say the new slim-fitting suits will turn sloppy-looking men into sexy men - but there's a catch. Buying the new suits require figuring out what size to wear, all over again.
If the Suit Fits
Because of the importance of getting a proper fit, the man who will be wearing the suit should be along for the shopping session if someone else, like his wife, is doing the shopping.
"As much as he may resist, he's got to come with you, because the fit is essential," Szish said. There are three things to look for, but jacket length is the crucial first step. When the man's arms are straight down at his sides, he should just be able to cup the sleeve in his hand. The jacket should not be baggy.
Secondly, the trouser length should be neither too long, nor too short. And thirdly, there should be a half-inch of the shirt sticking out of the jacket cuff.
Men also have a new selection of suits to choose from. Double-breasted suits were out of fashion for a few seasons, but now they are back, Szish said. She suggested a gray, double-breasted flannel suit as a modern classic that never goes out of style.
Szish paired it with a white shirt and a gray tie that was almost the same color as the suit. The suit gives a thin and narrow look, with narrow lapels and flat-front, thin-legged pants. It looks best on tall men, Szish said.
Avoiding the Clown Suit
There used to be an unwritten rule that men should not mix patterns. But fashion's powers-that-be are now giving such mixing and matching the thumbs-up. Still, how can you mix patterns without looking like a clown?
