Tie (44)You might think casual clothing never went away, but you’d be wrong. Over the past five to seven years the focus of clothing magazines and those TV makeover programmes has been pretty well entirely on catwalk style fashion – even if it’s been to show you how you can get a catwalk look with high street prices.
But since the beginning of the year there’s been a change – now fashion magazines are showing polo-shirts and T-shirts on models like Agness Deyn, and designers like Liam Gallagher have made casual clothing the focus of their collections. Perhaps it’s not surprising that a crusty rocker like Gallagher should favour sweats and jog-pants, but even Vogue and Cosmo are keen to show that casual clothing can look good.
Partly this is because people just don’t have enough money to spend any more, and magazines want to reflect their customers’ needs and priorities but it’s also because new designs and designers have changed the way we think about casual clothing. Sweatshirts are seen under formal jackets in many parts of California these days, and crisp collared polo-shirts are worn for lunch by both men and women in business.
To get the new high fashion look, make sure you focus on colour co-ordination in your casuals, and apply a little spray starch to the collar of your polo-shirt when ironing so that it doesn’t sag or flap.
